Fort Walton Beach Medical Center

Acute Care Services


Acute Care Services are located on the third and fourth floors of the main hospital. These services are broken into four sub-units of health care. We have a Medical/Oncology unit, a Medical/Dialysis unit, post-surgical unit, and a pediatrics unit.

The Medical/Oncology unit provides inpatient services for medical conditions which include but are not limited to cancer and associated modalities such as the administration of chemotherapy.

Medical/Dialysis includes inpatient services for medical and post-operative patients (excluding cardiac surgery and organ transplants) with various medical conditions which include but are not limited to diabetes, hypertension, renal failure, and associated treatment modalities such as peritoneal hemodialysis.

The post-surgical unit includes inpatient services for post operative patients.

The Pediatric unit provides comprehensive care to children up to early adulthood. It is a Level I Pediatric Unit providing inpatient and therapeutic services for the medical and surgical diagnosis, treatment, and care of children.



Cardiac Rehabilitation


The Healthy Heart and Rehab Center is the most advanced, comprehensive cardiac rehab center on the Emerald Coast. Our exercise facility is designed with the state-of-the-art equipment as well as trained cardiac professionals. We'll educate you and your family on strengthening your heart and your resolve.

Critical Care Unit


The Critical Care Units at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center are comprised of four patient care areas: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit, and Progressive Care Unit. Patient care services are provided in accordance to FWBMC's policies and procedures, AACN Standards of Critical Care Practice, and ANA Standards. These units are operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Through a collaborative approach, the nursing process and a modified team nursing model are used as a framework for the provision of patient care, as defined in the FWBMC nurse practice model.

Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiovascular Imaging Services


FWBMC's team of Radiologists and staff offers a full spectrum of radiological services. Our Diagnostic Imaging Department is a leader in noninvasive imaging, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA). We also offer comprehensive computed tomography imaging, including the latest GE Light Speed CT scanner, CT Angiography, 3D imaging and the all new GE Discovery ST PET/CT scanner.

Emergency Department


The Emergency department consists of 22 treatment rooms/bays and a dedicated ER Radiology Room. The Emergency Department assesses and treats all ages, from neonatal to geriatric patients. With the emphasis on timely assessment and treatment, the Emergency Department staff are skilled in the specific age-related needs of these diverse populations in this clinical setting. Every effort is made to include the patient's family or significant others in treatment, education, and discharge planning needs. All age groups served are at risk for abuse and neglect, so staff are prepared to identify the different signs and symptoms unique to the various ages. The Department has developed mechanisms for triage, treatment, and stabilization as defined in department policies and procedures. As a level II Emergency Department, we are equipped to handle any traumatic, medical, hazardous chemical exposure, surgical, pediatric, or psychiatric emergency. EXPRESS CARE At Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, we've created a special ExpressCare unit with seven patient rooms, x-ray and lab capabiliites to provide you with a comfortable place to get quick medical attention for minor emergencies. ExpressCare is open 10 a.m to 10 p.m every day.

Food and Nutrition Services


The Food and Nutrition Services department is located on the first floor of the hospital. The department provides therapeutic services through the clinical section as well as patient and cafeteria food service. Clinical services provide nutrition assessment and counseling for all ages infant to geriatric. The department is open 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Food and Nutrition Services department is managed by a qualified Director with assistance from a Registered Dietician in clinical services.

Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation


Fort Walton Beach Medical Center's Physical Rehabilitation Unit delivers care based on a transdisciplinary team approach. This means that all members of the team are equally responsible for your overall improvement and in every aspect of your care.

Our team of rehabilitation professionals provides services to patients experiencing:

  • Limitations in self-care
  • Impaired mobility, balance and coordination
  • Limitations in strength and range of motion
  • Cognitive and perceptual deficits
  • Speech and communication problems
  • Swallowing disorders
Each service focuses on minimizing the effects of residual disability for the patient and family members, providing an environment in which further recovery can occur, and preventing further injury or illness.

Laboratory Services


The scope of care monitored by the Pathology and Medical Laboratory Services is complex. It includes diagnostic and therapeutic services provided by both Clinical and Anatomical sections. The type of patients served include patients of all age groups from neonatal to geriatric inpatients, outpatients, physician referral and nursing home patients. The Laboratory is directed by Pathologists certified by the American Board of Pathology in both anatomical and clinical Pathology. The supervisor and technical staff is composed of qualified Medical Technologists, Cytotechnologist and Histologists, registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and licensed by the State of Florida. Qualified Phlebotomists and clerical staff complete the Department. Department services provided within the scope include hematology, chemistry, microbiology, toxicology, serology, urinalysis, therapeutic drugs, blood bank, histology, and cytology.



Pharmacy Services


The Pharmacy Department, from a central location, dispenses medication for hospital inpatients including pediatrics, adults, geriatrics, and outpatient day surgery patients. Departmental services include: unit-dose drug distribution, IV admixtures, Chemotherapy, Immunoglobulin infusions, antibiotic piggybacks, and pain management solutions via epidural or Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pumps. Outpatient prescriptions are filled for employees only. The Pharmacy is open 18 hours a day from 6:00 am to 12:00 am seven days a week including holidays. During closed hours, a pharmacist is "on-call" for drug information and other assistance. All staff members within the Pharmacy Department have documented evidence of competency in key skills specific to the preparation and distribution of pharmaceutical.

Psychiatric Treatment Center (PTC)


The Psychiatric Treatment Center is a 48 bed inpatient facility within the general hospital that is dedicated to providing quality mental health care. The essence of the facility is rooted in the relentless professionals that promote a spirit of hope, compassion, and genuine caring for the mentally ill. Adult Hospitalization is designed to assist adults 18 and older, who have emotional symptoms that interfere with their lives. The PTC also has a Dual-Diagnosis Track, which is the combination of mental illness and substance abuse or dependence. The spectrum of dual diagnosis includes all major mental illness and the wide variety of abused substances.

Surgical Services


The Surgery Department provides a broad range of Surgical Services to the community in a safe environment and in a timely manner. Our community includes the patients and their families, the medical staff, and the employees of this facility. The department consists of six general operating rooms and one cystoscopy room to provide surgical services in General, Orthopedic, Gynecological, Plastic, ENT, GU, Opthamalic, Laparoscopic, Thoracic, Maxillofacial, Neurological, Vascular, and Emergency trauma surgery. We have inpatient and outpatient capabilities along with a self-contained Endoscopy Suite. This suite is devoted to the performance of endoscopic procedures of the gastrointestinal tract.

Therapy Services


Fort Walton Beach Medical Center physical, occupational, and speech therapy provides both inpatient and outpatient services. We use a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to help patients reach and surpass their goals for therapy. Women's Suite



The Women's Suite is designed to meet the personal needs of the female patient from Childbirth through menopause. The friendly, attentive Labor and Delivery staff nurture the patient and family as their baby makes its debut into the world. The warm, homey environment of the Labor, Deliver and Recovery rooms provide a comfortable, supportive milieu and encourages family involvement in this very special happening. The Nursery staff furnishes comprehensive care to the neonates and instructs the new parents in childcare. A complete range of gynecological services is provided including specialized care after surgery. Breast diagnostics, with accredited mammography unit and instructions on breast exams help provide early detection of breast cancer. Many different types of classes are present; these include childbirth education, sibling class and various health forums all designed to best care for the women of this community.
